The Fall of Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker, once the Republic's greatest hero and Jedi Knight, undergoes a tragic transformation into the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Haunted by prophetic visions of his wife Padmé dying in childbirth, he becomes increasingly vulnerable to manipulation by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Although Anakin discovers that Palpatine is actually the Sith Lord Darth Sidious and the architect of the Clone Wars, his desperation to save Padmé overrides his loyalty to the Jedi Order. When Master Mace Windu attempts to execute Sidious, Anakin intervenes, maiming Windu and allowing Sidious to kill him with Force lightning. This pivotal moment marks his complete surrender to the dark side; he pledges allegiance to Sidious in exchange for the power to prevent death. Rechristened Darth Vader, he immediately executes Order 66, commanding clone troopers to slaughter their Jedi generals across the galaxy before personally massacring the remaining Jedi within the Temple on Coruscant.

The Birth of the Galactic Empire

Following Anakin's betrayal, Darth Sidious orchestrates a total regime change, transforming the democratic Galactic Republic into the tyrannical Sith Empire. After Vader assassinates the Separatist leaders on Mustafar, Sidious addresses the Galactic Senate, publicly denouncing the Jedi as traitors and declaring himself Emperor. This political coup is executed with brutal efficiency; the clone troopers, conditioned to obey Order 66, turn on their commanders, effectively exterminating the Jedi Order in a single night. While Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi narrowly escape this purge, they are forced into hiding as the new regime consolidates power. Sidious and Vader immediately begin supervising the construction of the Death Star, a massive battle station designed to enforce Imperial will through fear. The Republic's institutions are dismantled, replaced by an authoritarian hierarchy where dissent is crushed, marking the beginning of decades of Sith rule over the galaxy.

The Duel on Mustafar

The conflict between light and dark culminates in a devastating confrontation on the volcanic planet Mustafar. Padmé Amidala travels to the site to plead with her husband, now Vader, to abandon his new path, unaware that Obi-Wan Kenobi has stowed away on her ship. When Obi-Wan reveals himself, an enraged Vader mistakenly believes Padmé is betraying him and Force-chokes her in a fit of rage. A brutal lightsaber duel ensues between the former master and apprentice amidst the planet's lava flows. Obi-Wan ultimately defeats Vader, severing three of his limbs and leaving him to burn alive near the molten rock. As Vader lies broken and remorseful, denouncing his former friend, Obi-Wan retrieves his lightsaber and leaves him for dead. This battle physically destroys Anakin Skywalker while simultaneously creating the iconic armored figure of Darth Vader.

Legacy and Exile

In the aftermath of the Sith's rise, the galaxy is left in darkness as the surviving Jedi go into exile to preserve hope for a future rebellion. Yoda flees Coruscant after stalemating Sidious in combat, while Obi-Wan retreats to Tatooine to watch over Anakin's son, Luke. Padmé gives birth to twins, Luke and Leia, on Polis Massa before dying from her injuries, still believing there is good left within her husband. Sidious recovers the mutilated Vader, encasing his body in a black life-support suit that sustains him but traps him in perpetual pain. Lying to Vader about Padmé's death, Sidious claims she died of broken heart rather than Vader's handiwork, deepening the Sith Lord's tragedy. The Empire now stands unchallenged, with the twins hidden from their father and the galaxy under the iron grip of the Sith, setting the stage for a long era of oppression.
